He holds the world record over 800 metres and won the Olympic title twice — the London 2012 final is generally called the greatest two-lap race ever run.
David Lekuta Rudisha is a Maasai from Kilgoris, the son of Daniel Rudisha, who won a silver medal in the relay at the 1968 Olympics. He ran 800 metres in a way almost nobody else has been willing to: from the front, all the way, without a pacemaker to hide behind.
In the Olympic final in London on 9 August 2012 he did exactly that and ran 1:40.91, a world record. It was the only world record set on the track at those games. Every one of the eight men in that final ran a personal best, a national record or a world junior record, which has never happened in an Olympic final before or since, and Sebastian Coe called it the greatest 800 metres of all time.
He won the world championship in 2011 and 2015 and defended the Olympic title in Rio in 2016, and his record still stands. A serious knee injury and a car crash interrupted the later years of his career.
