Born at Kapsisiywa in the Rift Valley in November 1984, Kipchoge came to the marathon after a track career and proceeded to dominate it, winning Olympic gold and the major city marathons repeatedly.
In Vienna in 2019 he covered the marathon distance in under two hours in a specially arranged event — not eligible as a world record because of the pacing arrangements, but the first time any human had done it.
