Miriam Khamadi Were is a Kenyan public health advocate and academic, and the first recipient of the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize.
A medical doctor from the University of Nairobi with master's and doctoral degrees in public health from Johns Hopkins, she directed the Community-Based Health Care Project in Kakamega, served as UNICEF's Chief of Health and Nutrition in Ethiopia, as WHO Representative there, and directed the UN Population Fund's country support team for East and Central Africa. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022.
